Travelling with your Visa Card - Collision/Loss Damage Insurance

Overview of CLDI Coverage.

Pay the full cost of a car rental with an Eligible Visa card and the Visa Auto Rental Collision/Loss Damage Insurance program will cover you at no additional cost. This insurance coverage means you do not need to purchase the collision/loss damage insurance coverage offered by the car rental company.

The following conditions must be met:

  • You must pay the full cost of the car rental with an Eligible Visa card;
  • You must initiate and complete the entire transaction with the same Visa card;
  • Only the cardholder can rent, take possession of the car, and decline the rental agency insurance;
  • You must decline the collision/loss damage insurance offered by the car rental company;
  • Your cardholder account must be in good standing;
  • Coverage is limited to one rental vehicle at a time, i.e. if during the same period there is more than one vehicle rented by the cardholder, only the first rental vehicle will be eligible for coverage;
  • The Visa Collision/Loss Damage Insurance program will not cover a car rental period of more than 48 consecutive days.

Collision/Loss Damage or Theft

Collision/loss damage insurance pays the full cost of repairs up to the actual cash value of the rental car should you become involved in an accident or should the car be stolen, regardless of whether or not you are responsible for the damage. It also reimburses the rental company for any loss of use while the damaged car is being repaired or replaced.

Some car rental agencies require a deposit when you decline the collision/loss damage insurance they offer. When choosing a car rental agency, consider selecting one that offers excellent rates and does not require a deposit because you have declined the collision/loss damage insurance they offer.

Who is insured

The Insured Person is the cardholder, who presents himself/herself in person at the Rental Agency, pays with an Eligible Visa card, signs the rental contract, declines the Rental Agency's Collision Damage Waiver (CDW), or its equivalent, takes possession of the rental vehicle and who complies with the terms of the Visa Collision/Loss Damage Insurance policy.

Any other person(s) who drives the car with the Insured Person's permission is also insured, whether or not their names have been listed on the rental contract at the time the agreement was signed. However, both the cardholder and all other drivers must meet and follow the terms of the rental contract including being legally licensed and permitted to drive the rental vehicle under the laws of the jurisdiction(s) where the rented vehicle will be used.

Types of Vehicles

Except those listed below, all cars, sports utility vehicles and mini-vans (defined as vans made by an automobile manufacturer designed to transport a maximum of eight people including the driver) are covered.

The Visa Collision Loss/Damage Insurance does NOT cover the following types of vehicles:

  • vans, cargo vans or mini cargo vans (other than Mini-Vans as described above);
  • trucks, pick-up trucks or any vehicle that can be spontaneously reconfigured into a pick-up truck;

Length of Rental

The length of time you rent the same vehicle or vehicles must not exceed 48 consecutive days, which follow one immediately after the other. In order to break the consecutive day cycle, a full calendar day must exist between rental periods. If the rental period exceeds 48 consecutive days, coverage will not be provided from the first day onwards, i.e. coverage will not be provided for either the first 48 consecutive days or any subsequent days. Coverage may not be extended for more than 48 days by renewing or taking out a new rental agreement with the same or another Rental Agency for the same vehicle or another vehicle.

Car Rental Options

"Traditional" auto rental agencies and domestic car sharing programs are valid options for which the Visa Collision/Loss Damage Insurance program will provide coverage. Coverage is not provided for tax-free car leasing programs.
