What is Visa Debit?

Visa Debit is a whole new type of debit card. Visa Debit allows you to safely pay for things directly from your bank account and also lets you shop in more places online and around the world. Outside Canada it can be used for purchases in over 200 countries, at millions of merchant locations wherever Visa is accepted. It can also be used at over 1.6 million automated banking machines (ABM's), over the phone and by mail.

Your bank may offer you one of two types of Visa Debit cards:

Visa Debit co-badged card
This card will display both Visa Debit and other network provider logos (eg InteracTM). It will support Visa Debit for online, telephone, mail order, and international transactions. For point of sale (POS) transactions in Canada a Visa Debit co-badged card will not be presented as a choice and the transaction will be processed as an InteracTM Direct Payment transaction.

Visa Debit card
This card will display a Visa Debit logo only. It will support Visa Debit transactions at all points of sale where Visa is accepted at stores online, internationally, and at merchants in Canada that accept Visa Debit.
